Beegu

She is lost, and the adults keep turning away.

Beegu — written and illustrated by Alexis Deacon (Red Fox). Ages 3–7.

Beegu crash-lands on Earth, small and yellow and entirely alone. She tries the rabbits, the leaves, a puppy. Nothing quite works.

Deacon draws the adults as blank shapes with their backs turned, and the children in proper detail. Only the children look at her properly, and that choice does all the work.

The catch — it's quietly sad, and the ending is bittersweet rather than happy. Some children want her to stay.

The children are kind to her. The adults walk past her.
